Beach Bonfire

This is just an announcement that the ESA is planning another social event for Economics students and faculty. This is a great opportunity for all of the students and teachers to hang out and have fun outside of the classroom! This event is strictly for students and faculty of the economics department, but you can bring guests! Spouses and children are invited.

This time, we’ll be having a BEACH BONFIRE at Ocean Beach on Saturday, March 10th from 2:00pm-7:00pm (approximately 7:00pm–it depends on how cold it gets).

These are the activities we have planned for the day

  • Sports: if you have a volleyball, soccer ball, Frisbee, or football, BRING IT. Let’s play
  • Food: we want to have a BBQ potluck!! Hopefully we’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers (and veggie burgers), chips, and (non-alcoholic) drinks galore. Also, Smores will be on the list!
  • Music: if anyone has any ideas of how to arrange this, please let me know! Maybe a boombox? Do people still use those??

IMPORTANT NOTICE: DUE TO BEACH POLICY, THIS WILL BE AN ALCOHOL-FREE EVENT.

Because this is a BBQ/potluck, we DO need everyone that attends to bring something! Here’s a list of necessary items:

  • Hamburgers and buns if you sign up to bring hamburgers, please bring an appropriate number of buns. I will email those who signed up to bring them a few days before the event to let them to know the tentative number we need
  • Hot dogs and buns: if you sign up to bring hot dogs, please bring an appropriate number of buns. I will email those who signed up to bring them a few days before the event to let them to know the tentative number we need
  • Drinks: suggestions: juice, soda, water —- NON-ALCOHOLIC ONLY, PLEASE
  • Other BBQ items: chips, potato salad, fruit salad, cookies/brownies, or any other food to share that you want to bring!
  • Grilling Utensils: spatula/turner for burgers, tongs, etc., AND possibly a large grilling grate to cook the burgers and hotdogs on
  • Firewood: IOLY untreated and unpainted firewood allowed at Ocean Beach), natural kindling or old newspaper and matches/lighter. NOTE: Please contact ESA if you are willing to bring firewood
  • Utensils: forks, spoons, knives, cups, plates, and napkins
  • Condiments: ketchup, mustard, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes
  • Garbage bags

HOW TO RSVP: Please sign up in the economics department (HSS 142). You’ll need to put down your name, your email, your phone number, the TOTAL number in your party, and what you will be bringing. This list will be available in the department on Thursday morning, so be sure to sign up ASAP!! Also, if when you sign up, you see that there are necessary items from the above list that no one else has yet signed up to bring, please sign up for that!! This is a group effort and we need everyone to pitch in for the necessities before we add complements! THE DEADLINE TO RSVP IS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7TH by 12:00PM.

Coffee Chat with Dr. Chattopadhyay

On Monday, February 13, 2012, a few of us met up with Dr. Chattopadhyay, who is the chair of the Economics department. He has been teaching at San Francisco State University for 13 years and has published many articles and peer-reviewed journals. He is currently teaching one course. His areas of interests are environmental economics, public policy, and econometrics. He is currently working on a few projects with three grad students. His goal is to reach out to the undergraduate students and to get them involved in research and journal publishing.

Dr. Chattopadhyay talked about the financial problems that the CSU system is currently facing and Governor Jerry Brown’s tax proposal. If voters do not approve of his tax hike plan, then the CSU system will be faced with a budget crisis.

Dr. Chattopadhyay believes that a successful person is one who possesses an analytical mind. He encourages students to take ownership of what they are doing and develop more analytical and entrepreneurial skills.

Coffee Chat with Dr. Chattopadhyay!

We invite all Econ Undergrads & Grads to an informal coffee chat with our Department Chair, Dr. Sudip Chattopadhyay!

Please join us on today, Monday, February 13th from 14:15- 15:00 in HSS 153 for coffee, snacks, and a chance to get to know Dr. Chattopadhyay. He will be available to discuss his research and answer any questions you may have about a future in Economics!
